This week, the Family Support Center has two special programs --- a private mental health center with locations in Colorado Springs and Pueblo.
And Rebecca said, I see that something is wrong. "They don't talk to each other. My girls don't make eye contact, they don't answer their names."
"My husband died in February 2019," Rebekah said. "He had a heart attack and then on March 3, 2019, he died."

Raising an only child is difficult, but raising a child with special needs is even more difficult.
"I'm asking for help," he said. "They came down and we kept time for the girls, that's all we can do is follow the rules. sad. or I'm happy'---they don't know the change but they know they say something has changed."
"The goal of the program is to get the kids ready for school as they should be," said Program Director Stephanie Cooke.
The program focuses on children under 7 years of age---preparing them for inclusion in the everyday classroom.

The program emphasizes social and life skills such as learning to talk, question, share and change.
"When Lily was between 2 and 4, she left the house without a blanket," explained Rebeka. "If I try to take him away he gets upset. Now he's dressed. He went out to the car. He knows how to dress in his seat."
"It's great to see them moving forward with the program whether we have it for a year, two years or six months," Cooke said. "It's amazing to walk into the group and see the changes."
Ribeka is proud of the education her daughters are getting and credits Whare Tautoko Whānau for the skills they have learned.

"Today, people tell me that you don't know that girls are autistic," Rebekah said. "You don't know that their father is gone. You don't know and it wouldn't have happened without Foundations (also called the Early Explorers program).
Cooke said he will look at where each child is and then create a plan for success.
"If a child is good at socializing, there will be more activities and opportunities for them compared to someone who needs less support to get by."
"Lily can speak French, Spanish, Mandarin and sometimes Chinese," he said. "She's smart, and Emma is probably the sassiest I've ever seen."

Now with the life and wisdom of the Family Support Center, Rebekah says her twins will achieve something she never thought would happen so soon.
"They will be in first grade next year," Rebeka said. "He (their father) will be very happy.
"Part of my job is to explain to parents that their child is perfect," Hoffman said. "Autism is usually a functional deficit which means you have problems planning, solving problems, anticipating changes, changing your goals --- this is problem 1 for children with autism."
Hoffman says personalized and focused treatment plans can help children of all ages feel better prepared when they come home.

"We help young people in middle school and high school make friends and make friends," said Sandra Vandergoot, behavioral health examiner (BCBA) and supervisor. "Social skills are a struggle for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). We work on these skills at a young age so they can develop them as adults.
"Your child at the end of this program will be able to go through the experience of being with young people of their age, having conversations and being together," said Vandergoot. "They find it easier to keep friends or meet them in the community."
No matter where your child lives, the Family Support Center wants the community to know that they are expanding the resources and plans to help children and youth with autism succeed.
This program is aimed at children under 7 years of age who are preparing and have just started school. Early adopters develop skills that help children become independent and successful in school such as joining groups, following group directions and social skills. This program is supervised by a Board Certified Self-Evaluator. According to the Family Support Center, many people come to this program, not the traditional preschool to help them get to kindergarten. Speech and OT are available to qualified students.
