Family Support Council - Our 2020 annual report is here, and we've taken a closer look at the good work we've done with our programs. In this article we will look at home software. Recently, Colorado has begun to adopt a "Whole Family" and "Bi-General Approach" that focuses on fostering children, parents and groups of caregivers rather than individuals. It publicly adopted this approach in 2017 and has since placed its programs and services into two high school districts that are aligned with Colorado's framework for early childhood education, learning and development, and family support.

Family Support Volunteers

Want to learn more about this bilingual approach? This approach was adopted by the Arapahoe County Department of Human Services and developed by the Aspen Institute.

Modern families are single-parent families, face increased pressure to balance work and parenting, and often find it difficult to find affordable and quality childcare. This is a problem for every family, regardless of their income group.

That's why we offer parenting classes, home visiting programs, nanny care services, and quality improvement and delivery of early childhood care and conditions. In 2019, we increased the quality of our support for early childhood professionals, the site supporting more hours of coaching than before.

The Early Childhood Council of Arapahoe County offers a variety of family support programs that connect families and enrich them with the knowledge and advice they need. Our ongoing resources and support support the safety, well-being and development of children, families and communities in Arapahoe County.

Family Support Link

Parents as Teachers is home to a program for special needs families in Arapahoe County with children from birth to kindergarten. Parenting teachers prepare as parents and educators with trained professionals who make regular home visits during the first years of a child's life.

Our SafeCare program reaches families at high risk of child abuse and neglect. Spend several weeks with staff meeting individually with parents and caregivers of children, training them in the skills and tools they need to make their homes safer, better understand children's health needs, and better communicate with their children.

With over 400 different care providers in Arapahoe County alone, finding the right provider can be a confusing process for families. Our Child Care Navigator matches families with their unique provider needs, finding child care for preschool, before and after school, special needs care, special needs care, CCCAP availability, and proximity to work or home.

Founded by the Arapahoe County Department of Human Services, our Safe and Stable Families Initiative provides advocacy, resources and education to families. Our sailing staff also reunite families in needy communities. Through PSSF, we also offer the Incredible Years, a free, 14-week parenting program where parents can learn specific strategies and skills to promote their children's social competence and reduce behavior problems.

Families In Positive + European Family Support Network: Projects To Promote The Positive Parenting Approach In Child And Family Services

In today's fast-paced world, parents and educators are under more pressure than ever before. Today, one in four children lives with one parent, and more than half of parents with young children say it is difficult to find affordable quality childcare. One-parent families clearly need access to a child to participate in the labor force, but two-parent families need access. In Colorado, 63% of children under 6 have both available parents in their workforce.

Additionally, affordable childcare is still difficult to find. The Bell Policy Center estimated that in 2018, middle-class families in Colorado with two parents still in the workforce spent about 20% of their annual income on child care.

The Navigator answers questions about financial assistance, such as the Colorado Child Care Program (CCCAP), and educates the community about quality and availability of care. The service is free, confidential and closely coordinated with the Arapahoe County Department of Human Services, so families who have already received help are more likely to be connected to child care. In 2019, our navigator made 520 referrals to health care companies and facilities.

Interestingly, 51% of respondents became families seeking help through the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program. TANF is a temporary program designed to help families become self-sufficient.

Likewise, 28% of respondents requested special assistance for families with recent consanguineous relationships or the Colorado Child Care Assistance Program (CCCAP).

This means that most of the families helped by this service are low-income families or families that have recently received additional childcare from a kinship placement.

The goal in all of our family support programs is to identify and empower families so that parents and children are valued, healthy and strong. This often means connecting parents to a wider network of resources. Our Parents as Teachers home visiting program helps identify developmental delays and enhance parent education, but staff can also connect families with community resources.
